The already impressively capable Subaru Outback gets an all-new trim for the 2022 model year: Wilderness. The all-new Wilderness trim offers up an array of tweaks and additions that help make it a true off-road champion. From enhanced all-wheel drive to increased ground clearance, Loveland, CO drivers in the market for a new off-road SUV can look to the Outback Wilderness with confidence. The new Subaru Outback Wilderness also features a variety of interior and exterior aesthetic additions that make it stand out even more from the other Outback trim levels.

Rugged Off-Road Capability

You can skip outfitting a new Subaru Outback for the rugged off-road yourself and jump straight to the all-new Wilderness trim. The new Subaru Outback Wilderness outstrips every previous iteration of the Outback in terms of off-road capability thanks to a long list of unique performance features. New performance changes include tweaks to the shocks, which have been extended for extra wheel travel and 9.5-inches of ground clearance. The suspension also gets a refresh, with it now being turned for increased stability on dirt while retaining handling and comfort. Beyond this, the Wilderness trim changes its front and rear bumpers to change departure and approach angles. Instead of 18.6 degrees of approach, the Wilderness features 20 degrees. Departure was 21.7 degrees and is now 23,6 degrees. In ramp breakover angle, the Wilderness jumps from 19.4 degrees to 21.2 degrees.

Interior

As far as the interior of the Wilderness goes, Johnstown drivers can look forward to StarTex-trimmed seats, headrests with embossed Wilderness logos, all-weather floormats, a waterproof rear cargo tray, and unique interior trim. The interior trim includes copper-color stitching, anodized copper accents, and a Wilderness emblazoned instrument panel. Technology

Windsor drivers can look forward to robust tech features to help stay connected while taking on the great outdoors. Indeed, the Outback Wilderness trim includes an 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM radio. There are a few upgrades available, as well. The sole tech upgrade is an available navigation system.

Performance

Propelling the off-road champion is a 2.4-liter flat-4 turbocharged engine that makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Working with the engine is a continuously variable transmission and all-wheel drive. Drivers can enjoy increased shifting control thanks to steering wheel paddle shifters. The new Subaru Outback Wilderness trim also gets a slightly enhanced transmission thanks to some tweaking to the final-drive ratio, which now offers up better torque thanks to a new 4.11:1 ratio (formerly was 4.44:1). This new change allows the Outback Wilderness better climbing capability, to the tune of a 40-percent grade covered with gravel. For various terrain changes, drivers can turn to the X-Mode all-wheel drive terrain management system, which includes deep snow/mud modes.
